Malawi arrived at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as first-time qualifiers, ranked 153rd in the FIFA women’s world ranking. Their opening assignment was Nigeria: defending African champions, ten-time WAFCON winners and one of the continent’s established football powers. Malawi beat them 3–2.
