The World Has Changed, So Should You: The Coming Wave

The world we knew just a decade ago no longer exists. Technology is no longer a tool we simply wield—it’s an architect reshaping the very foundation of how we build, connect, and create. And with this transformation comes an undeniable truth: to stay relevant, we must evolve.

Recently, I found myself reflecting on the speed at which AI has become integrated into my daily life, and most importantly, work. In the past, building companies demanded months of meticulous effort, countless meetings, and the coordination of entire teams. Now, with the assistance of AI tools like ChatGPT, what once took months can be achieved in days—or even hours—with the right intention and precise prompting. This isn’t just convenience. It is power.

But power like this doesn’t come without consequence. I’ve had long discussions with mentors and colleagues about the age-old fear: Will AI replace us? The short answer is *yes—*at least for those unwilling to pivot.

That’s why our education systems, businesses, and personal skillsets must lean more into strategic thinking, creativity, and leadership—qualities machines have yet to master. Technical skills, while still important, are no longer the sole currency of value. Machines can write code, analyze data, and design solutions faster than we ever could. The real differentiator now lies in how we think and lead in the presence of these tools.

On my recent trip to Washington, I took a detour to Redmond, and visited the Microsoft campus. My mentor, Miguel, was glad to host me, and we had some rather great conversations about the gaming industry, AI, and the future of the world that we exist in.

At the end of our chat, Miguel gifted me ‘The Coming Wave‘ and ‘Dear Madam President‘; two books that speak so deeply to the things which I care about (I aspire to be an intentional gifter like that in my near future).

I have yet to start reading ‘Dear Madam President‘, as I am currently reading ‘The Coming Wave‘ by Mustafa Suleyman (CEO of Microsoft AI, and co-founder of (Google) DeepMind and Inflection). I have to say, it is such a good book; and precisely the knowledge I needed at this point in time.

In his book, Mustafa Suleyman eloquently outlines the waves of technological disruption that are already upon us and those that lie ahead. Suleyman doesn’t shy away from painting a complex picture—one filled with both opportunity and risk. He suggests that the future belongs to those who understand the balance between innovation and responsibility.

Reading his insights reinforced what I’ve been experiencing firsthand: this era demands a new type of leadership—one that blends technical understanding with emotional intelligence, adaptability, and ethical foresight.

The Shift We Cannot Ignore

Artificial Intelligence is not just another industrial revolution. It is a fundamental restructuring of the relationship between humans and machines. Unlike previous technological advancements, AI learns, adapts, and evolves. It has the potential to outpace human capabilities in many domains, leaving behind those who hesitate to evolve alongside it.

Consider the current workplace landscape. Already, AI-driven platforms manage scheduling, customer service, content creation, and even financial analysis. Companies leveraging these tools are rapidly gaining competitive advantages, optimizing workflows, and reducing costs. Those that resist this wave risk stagnation.

For businesses, the question isn’t whether to adopt AI but how quickly and effectively they can do so. Leaders must begin embedding AI literacy into their organizational culture. This means offering training programs, rethinking traditional roles, and promoting agile methodologies that allow for continuous adaptation.

From a personal development standpoint, we must adopt a mindset of lifelong learning. Just as Suleyman stresses in The Coming Wave, complacency is the enemy of progress. It is imperative that we consistently upgrade our skills, staying abreast of technological trends and learning to harness them creatively.

Opportunities for Growth and Innovation

While the rapid advancement of AI might seem daunting, it also opens doors to unprecedented innovation. Entire industries will emerge, while others will transform dramatically. This presents a fertile ground for entrepreneurs and forward-thinkers who can identify gaps, create new solutions, and lead with vision.

For example, fields like healthcare are seeing transformative AI applications—from predictive diagnostics to robotic surgery assistance. In education, adaptive learning platforms are personalizing experiences for students, enhancing knowledge retention, and streamlining administrative tasks. The arts, too, are benefiting from AI tools that generate music, visual art, and even literature, democratizing creative expression.

The possibilities are limitless, but they require a bold approach. As Suleyman underscores, the leaders of tomorrow will not be those who shy away from AI but those who embrace it wholeheartedly.

Ethics and Responsibility in the AI Era

With great power comes great responsibility. As AI capabilities expand, so does the need for ethical oversight and governance. Issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the displacement of workers must be addressed through collaborative efforts between governments, corporations, and civil society.

It is no longer enough to innovate for innovation’s sake. We must ensure that technological advancements serve humanity as a whole, fostering inclusivity and bridging—rather than widening—socioeconomic divides.

Suleyman’s The Coming Wave calls for a collective responsibility to guide the trajectory of AI development. His message echoes the importance of ethical stewardship, urging leaders to prioritize humanity’s well-being in the midst of rapid progress.

To those hesitant to embrace AI, I urge you: step forward. Learn, adapt, and integrate these tools into your workflow. The world isn’t slowing down, and neither should you.

Engage with AI not as a replacement but as an ally—one that enhances your capabilities and amplifies your potential. Attend workshops, join discussions, and remain curious. The transformation ahead is not a wave to resist but one to ride with intention.

With anticipation for what lies ahead,
Ntha
