You don’t enter a market to copy what the competition does exactly. You enter a market to disrupt it—to do stuff they can’t do.
I will be honest—I have not really gamed in what feels like near two decades. Apart from the occasional interaction with my phone games, I have not engaged with games in great detail in a long time.
Pivoting into the gaming industry is extremely nerve-wrecking for me, but it is also deeply exciting.
A Personal Connection to Xbox
My relationship with Xbox has evolved significantly over time. Growing up, gaming wasn’t a central part of my life, and my exposure to consoles came mostly through friends. Xbox always felt like a foreign territory—a brand I admired from afar but did not fully understand.
As I’ve grown professionally, I’ve come to appreciate the intricate ecosystems behind successful brands. Exploring my post-MBA career outcomes, I felt I had done most of the things I aspired to do—worked in the industries I wanted to work it; so much so I did not have a specific choice fo industry, and left it up to the Universe to surprise me.
I applied to a few companies—Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon. I could not believe it when I heard back from Microsoft, calling me for an interview. That was just the beginning of my shock, as on the interview day, I got even more shocked to realise I was being interviewed by specifically the Xbox team. I recall Leo asking me if I had applied specifically to Xbox, and I earnestly saying no. I was scared this would hurt my chances, but I was not willing to lie.
In about a week, I got word that I had been hired, and I would be joining the Xbox business development team as a Business Development Manager, for my MBA Summer Internship.

Xbox stands out to me as a beacon of innovation and strategy.
When I was offered the opportunity to join the Xbox team for my summer MBA internship, I knew it was time to dive deeper into the brand’s story. My friend RJay, a lifelong Xbox fan, recommended The Story of Xbox as the perfect starting point.
“Watch this,” he said. “Xbox is more than just a gaming console. They are pioneers of creativity and resilience.”
He wasn’t wrong. Watching the documentary has given me a front-row seat to the journey of Xbox, helping me understand the brand’s DNA and the values I will soon have the opportunity to contribute to as part of their team.
The 10-part documentary takes us on an incredible journey through the origins, challenges, and triumphs of one of the most iconic gaming brands in history. For me, this story is more than just a compelling documentary; it’s an inspiring precursor to my upcoming summer MBA internship with Xbox, where I will have the privilege of contributing to the legacy of this groundbreaking brand.
The Origins of Xbox: A Bold Gamble
We proposed something that aligned with how gaming was done in the Gaming Console space. You’ve gotta meet the market where it’s at.
The documentary opens with Microsoft’s audacious decision to enter the gaming industry in the late 1990s. At the time, Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo were dominant, and Microsoft’s entry into the market was seen as a risky move. The original Xbox launched in 2001, introducing groundbreaking features like built-in hard drives and Halo: Combat Evolved, a game that would define the brand’s identity.
As someone about to work with Xbox, I found this part of the documentary particularly inspiring. It showcased the brand’s ethos of taking bold risks and innovating fearlessly—values that resonate deeply with my own aspirations.
Challenges That Define Success
The Xbox journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. From the “Red Ring of Death” hardware failures to fierce competition, the brand has faced significant challenges. What stood out to me was the resilience of the Xbox team and their commitment to learning from these setbacks.
This mindset of turning challenges into opportunities is something I’m excited to witness and contribute to during my internship. Whether it’s improving customer experiences, exploring new strategies, or embracing emerging technologies, Xbox’s legacy of innovation offers countless lessons for navigating complex business landscapes.
Community and Innovation
One of the most compelling parts of the documentary was the emphasis on community. From pioneering online gaming with Xbox Live to fostering connections through Game Pass, Xbox has consistently placed gamers at the center of its strategy.
As an MBA intern, I’m eager to work on initiatives that continue to build this sense of community while driving business impact. Xbox’s ability to balance technological advancement with customer-centricity is a model for how brands can thrive in today’s competitive landscape.
Looking Ahead: My Role with Xbox
As I prepare for my internship, I feel inspired by the lessons of Xbox’s journey. I see this opportunity not just as a chance to contribute to a globally recognized brand but also as a platform to grow as a professional. The documentary reinforced the importance of bold thinking, resilience, and the power of community—values that I hope to embody during my time with Xbox.
RJay’s recommendation to watch The Story of Xbox was more than just a suggestion to learn about the company; it was an invitation to understand the ethos of a brand I will soon represent. Watching the documentary has filled me with pride and excitement for what lies ahead.
