A Visit from the UN Resident Coordinator: Kwathu Kollective

On May 29th, 2024, I, alongside my Kwathu Kollective team, had the honor of hosting the UN Resident Coordinator for Malawi, Rebeccah Adda-Dontoh, at the Kwathu Koworking Spaces in Lilongwe. It was a momentous occasion, not only because of her stature and the incredible work she represents but also because of the thought-provoking and impactful conversation we had about Africa’s future.

The Power of Collaboration

The Kwathu Koworking Spaces have always been more than just a place for work; they are a hub for ideas, innovation, and the belief that Africans can lead transformative change. Hosting the UN Resident Coordinator gave us an opportunity to showcase the work we do, from empowering youth and women entrepreneurs to fostering innovation and creativity across different sectors.

Her visit underscored the importance of collaboration between international organizations like the United Nations and local initiatives like Kwathu. It reaffirmed my belief that meaningful partnerships are essential in addressing Africa’s development challenges.

What Keeps You Up At Night?

During our conversation, one question took center stage: “What keeps you up at night?” It’s a question that delves deep into the heart of Africa’s development story—its challenges, its opportunities, and the dreams of its people.

For Ms. Becky, the answer reflected the urgency of addressing issues such as youth unemployment, access to quality education, and creating spaces that nurture innovation. For me, the question was a call to action, a reminder that the work we do at Kwathu Koworking Spaces must continue to create tangible impact.

As we discussed these pressing issues, it became clear that the future of Africa lies in empowering its people—particularly its youth and women—to take the lead in shaping sustainable solutions.

A Vision for Africa’s Development

Rebeccah’s visit was not just a highlight for the Kwathu Koworking Spaces but a moment of reflection for me. It brought to the forefront the importance of building ecosystems that not only address immediate needs but also lay the groundwork for long-term impact.

The work we do at Kwathu is guided by this vision: to provide Africans with the tools, spaces, and support they need to unlock their potential. Whether it’s through mentorship, skills training, or fostering innovation, we are committed to ensuring that the youth of Africa can stand as leaders on the global stage.

Looking Ahead

Hosting Rebeccah Adda-Dontoh at Kwathu Koworking Spaces was an inspiring moment that reminded me why we do what we do. It reaffirmed our mission to be a catalyst for change and a hub for Africans to dream, innovate, and lead.

As we continue this journey, I am reminded of the power of collaboration and the importance of creating spaces where conversations like these can thrive. Together, we can answer the question, “What keeps us up at night?” with action, innovation, and hope.

I look keenly to a brighter future for Africa—one led by its own people.
